Museum of Liverpool projection mapping

In 2011 the newest addition to the National Museums Liverpool was opened – the Museum of Liverpool which came with a beautiful building designed by architects 3XN. On the occasion of its opening in July, we created a projection mapping on its façade.
This mapping presented the second part of the waterfront show in Liverpool.

Reflection on the Waterfront. The opening of New Museum of Liverpool, July 22-24, 2011.

The projection was created by the Czech Republic-based artists The Macula, who have already won international acclaim for productions in their native city of Prague and in Dubai but have never worked in the UK before.

To celebrate the centenary of the Liver Building and the opening of the new Museum of Liverpool the artists have put together an audio-visual projection for each building.

The Liverpool challenge was one of the most important events for The Macula team in 2011. The On The Waterfront event was be the place where modern architectural mapping meets Liverpool’s history and its contemporaneousness. In our conception, the creative approach to the projection should come from the historical differences of the buildings.

The Royal Liver Building represented the old, traditional aspect of Liverpool’s history, drawing inspiration from the uniqueness of the architecture and depicting the city’s 800-year-history on the surface of the building. At the same time, we reflected on its significance as a symbol of the wealth during the late 19th century and early 20th century.

The event was kicked off by a musical performance each evening. On Friday, blues singer Connie Lush will take to the stage, on Saturday the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a Beatles-themed concert conducted by Carl Davis, while local band 6ix Toys will entertain the crowds on Sunday.
